Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a nonsurgical and non-pharmaceutical treatment method involving the insertion of tiny needles through your skin into specific points on your body.

The fine needles are strategically placed to help balance the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi in traditional Chinese medicine.

The chi flows through pathways called meridians in your body, and your acupuncturist inserts the needles into key points along these meridians to re-balance your energy flow. The specific points correspond with particular emotions, organs, or sensory feelings.

Acupuncture points are also believed to stimulate nerves, connective tissue, and muscles. Acupuncture is believed to promote natural healing and support physical and emotional health.

Some practitioners believe that the stimulation boosts your body’s natural painkillers.

Why is acupuncture performed?

Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine that’s most commonly used to treat pain. Acupuncture can also be especially useful for other purposes, such as stress management.

Acupuncture can be used to relieve the discomfort and pain associated with various conditions, such as:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches, including migraines and tension headaches
  • Labor pain
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Digestive issues
  • Menstrual issues

Acupuncture appointments usually take around 45 to 90 minutes. The number of treatments you receive depends on the severity and type of condition.

It’s common to receive about six to eight treatments. For some people, they might choose to continue treatments for many months or even years to continue receiving the benefits of acupuncture.

Your acupuncturist might suggest one or two treatments each week or monthly visits for health maintenance and seasonal tune-ups.

What can I expect during my acupuncture appointment?

You have acupuncture points in all areas of your body. Sometimes the appropriate points aren’t close to the area of your pain. During your appointment, you lay on a padded table.

Your acupuncturist specifically inserts the fine needles at various depths at strategic points on your body. Between five and 20 needles are used in conventional treatment. Acupuncture needles usually cause little to no discomfort.

Your acupuncturist might gently twirl or move the needles after placement or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles. The needles typically remain in place for around 10 to 20 minutes as you lie still and relax.

Your acupuncturist then carefully removes the needles. Some people feel energized, and others feel relaxed following acupuncture.

Acupuncture could be the solution you’ve been hoping for to resolve your discomfort. Call AIM or schedule online today to learn more.
